Skyline Tools Aids Swissair Flight 111 Crash Investigation

Skyline's imaging solutions help Royal Canadian Mounted Police identify victims and wreckage from Swissair Flight 111 disaster.

WOODLAND HILLS, CA, December 1 -- Skyline Tools' award-winning imaging toolkit, ImageLib Corporate Suite, is playing a key role in RCMP's investigation of the Swissair Flight 111 disaster, helping to identify victims and reconstruct wreckage from the September crash that claimed all 229 passengers and crew members.

The MD-11 jet bound for Geneva from Kennedy Airport went down in 200 feet of water with a violent impact that strewn fragmented, heat-distressed wreckage across the ocean floor, just off Nova Scotia. Canadian and American authorities have been retrieving aircraft debris for reconstruction to determine the cause, along with human remains for positive identification.

"This presented the most demanding of investigation scenarios," stated Corporal Shelley Emmerson, RCMP's specialist in advanced computer and imaging technology for major crimes. "We needed proven technologies, and chose ImageLib Corporate Suite because of its rapid deployment capabilities and comprehensive out-of-the-box features. Its simplicity and versatility enabled us to reach full production within hours."

The application required a fast, accurate digital imaging capability to minimize handling of wreckage and victims' remains -- and one that could capture, archive, and intelligently manage tens-of-thousands of documents, medical records, hand-written forms, current and past photographs, and digital images, for use by investigators.

Skyline's ImageLib Corporate Suite captures photographs and documents, enhancing scanned images automatically with image-processing, cleaning, and anti-aliasing technologies. A thumbnail manager is available for preview and manipulation, along with advanced annotation capabilities for adding notes to explain the unorthodox images common to this investigation. Skyline Tools' videolib inputs video to the application, permitting storage and playback of "clips". Both products have saved investigators thousands-of-hours of time collectively, enabling massive amounts of critical information to be digitally captured with speed and accurately.

"Success in this application meant quickly identifying victims for next-of-kin, to help ease their grief," stated Jillian Pinsker, Skyline Tools' Vice President. "Additionally, investigators can easily share and study aircraft debris to determine the cause, and hopefully prevent such tragedies in the future."
